Commentators on the tragic assassination of Charles Kirk would do well to study the history of political violence in the Weimar Republic. Over 350 political assassinations were committed in the years after World War I leading to the assumption of power by the Nazis. These assassinations were a destabilizing force within the Weimar state. As with the assassinations of the Kennedys and King in the 1960’s, every American has a stake in preventing such violence. In light of the Weimar experience such violence could threaten the stability of the state.
